Before cannabis was legally cultivated, manufactured and sold in New York, New Yorkers were exposed to some of the best cannabis coming out of California, albeit illegally. As the regulated market started heating up in New York, some doubted our ability to produce great cannabis in New York. Our mission has always been to make the highest quality products by New Yorkers, for New Yorkers and demonstrate that we can produce outstanding quality. High THC levels, just like the designations ‘indica’ and ‘sativa,’ are indicators by which many people typically navigate their buying decisions. However, the strongest cannabis isn’t the best cannabis and THC percentages don't necessarily help consumers understand the nuances of the plant’s many benefits. The most widely used extraction processes strip away most terpene expressions to achieve a high THC percentage but in doing so, they remove the nuance of the product and actually reduce the quality of the product.
It’s the combination of terpenes and THC that truly make the magic happen, and it is the entourage effect or interplay between the two rather than ‘a sativa, or an indica’ that directs the high. We assembled a team of proud New Yorkers with strongly held beliefs in the myriad benefits of cannabis, both hemp and marijuana. With the passing of the Marihuana Regulation & Taxation Act (MRTA) in 2020, the team focused our efforts on bringing New Yorkers the quality they deserved with a cannabis brand and product they could be proud of, and that could stand out in any market.
The majority of our team of founders, like many New Yorkers, are first generation immigrants. Our Hudson Valley operations employ New Yorkers from diverse backgrounds, mirroring the melting pot of our market, and speaking at least five different languages in and around our facilities. My experience prior to cannabis taught me about the power and value of meaningful brand and human connections. I was working at Starwood Hotels & Resorts, which has an umbrella of very diverse hotel brands, and in that high-end hospitality environment I experienced first hand what makes a meaningful brand and how to bring the “soul” of a brand to life through different touch points. I learned the importance of creating memorable, relatable experiences for people with the brand which is what we do every day at MFNY.
Throughout my career in both hospitality and real estate, consumer education has also played a big role in ensuring brand messages resonate with your audience. As cannabis producers, especially in a relatively new market like New York, we have an obligation to educate consumers about our products but also about cannabis consumption in general - benefits and possible harmful effects if not consumed responsibly. High Herstory: Can you walk us through your journey founding Artifact and the process of creating the Tempest pipe?
Ryan Rickett: Artifact started as a creative experiment but quickly became something bigger. Smoking accessories felt stuck in the past, split between high-end luxury pieces and generic stoner gear. Both had their place, but nothing spoke to me. I wanted something different: high-design, highly functional, and built to last.
The idea hit me during the pandemic. I was an out-of-work filmmaker in LA, using my smoking accessories more than usual, and the pipe I had was terrible. Harsh, impossible to clean, and straight-up ugly. I wanted something better, but nothing ticked all the boxes.
RR (con’t.): I have CG skills, so I started designing my own pipes, just for fun. But then I became obsessed and mocked up dozens of ideas. Pipes, bongs, ashtrays, stash jars. I called them artifacts from the future as a joke. At some point, I realized I wasn’t just designing for fun anymore. I was solving a real problem, and Artifact was born.
When I designed the Tempest, my goal was a smoother hit without the hassle of water. Glass pipes were too harsh, bubblers were impractical, and bongs took up too much space. Shape, smoothness, size, and cleanability became my design pillars. The Labyrinth cooling system naturally filters and cools each hit, and the optional titanium filter is great for smaller hits and extracts. The magnetic design allows for easy access, making cleaning effortless.
At first, it was just a concept, but once I committed to Artifact full-time, things took off. Filmmaking and entrepreneurship aren’t so different. Both demand problem-solving, adaptability, and a willingness to embrace mistakes and grow.
HH: What are some of the features that make the Tempest so unique? Tell us more about this Labyrinth design...
RR: What makes the Tempest unique is that it doesn’t look like a pipe at all. It’s more like a brutalist sculpture you’d find in a modern art gallery. Stand it up or lay it down, it just looks like art. Unlike most pipes, you don’t need to stash this one away when guests come over.
But the real magic is inside. The Labyrinth cooling system forces smoke through a winding passage, extending its travel distance and stripping away heat before it reaches your mouth. As the smoke cools, heavier particles naturally stick to the maze walls, providing built-in filtration. The result is a significantly smoother hit. The more you use it, the better it gets—it’s the gift that keeps on giving.
One question I get a lot is, “Does it really work?” Yes, and the difference is staggering. Do a side-by-side comparison with any other dry pipe, and you’ll immediately notice how much smoother the Tempest is. Because the hit is cooler, the flavor is more pronounced too.
The optional titanium filter sits in a small cavity under the bowl, perfect for smaller hits, resins, or extracts. I designed it this way because with most pipes you drop in a filter above the bowl so it never fits right and always falls out, which is very frustrating.
Cleaning is just as effortless. The magnetic design gives easy access to the inside, and with the included cleaning brush (which fits perfectly into the labyrinth) and a little alcohol, you can bring it back to new anytime. HH: Since you’re a filmmaker, we have to ask, was your brand aesthetic at all inspired by 2001: A Space Odyssey? If not, what inspired Artifact’s sleek and stunning futuristic branding?
RR: I'm truly flattered you think so. I’m actually working on a new concept code-named HAL 9000, so your instincts are spot on.
When I started developing Artifact, I built a massive creative research library, something I’ve done for years as a director. At first, it was all over the place, but as I refined it, a clear aesthetic emerged. I pulled from brutalist architecture, Soviet propaganda, cyberpunk films, sci-fi art, archaeological relics, album covers, computer graphics, and psychedelic visuals.
I also couldn’t let go of the word artifact, so it naturally became the name. That shaped the brand’s direction, leading to the “unearthed from the future” vibe we’ve been developing ever since. And just to come full circle, you better believe I have more than a few screenshots of that monolith moon-excavation scene from 2001 in there.
HH: How has your connection to cannabis influenced your creativity?
RR: Cannabis plays a specific role in my creative process. When I’m designing, it helps me tap into a flow state where my focus sharpens and my mind expands. It’s a tool that lets me see things from a different perspective and create on a deeper level.
When I’m handling business operations I need a different kind of focus, so for me, Cannabis is mostly for designing and creative projects; everything else stays in its own lane.
I believe that cannabis enhances your superpower, whatever that may be. For me, it amplifies creativity. For others, it might be problem-solving, focus, or relaxation. Everyone should have access to that.
HH: Do you have any new products coming down the pipe-line (no pun intended)?
RR: Absolutely! All the usual suspects in smoke wear are on deck, ashtrays, stash jars, water pipes, and more. All in the same design aesthetic as the Tempest, as well as a myriad other aesthetics I am eager to explore. Some are concepts, some are in prototyping, and a couple are about to hit production.
Everything follows the same high-design meets forward-thinking function philosophy. I’m also working on pieces that aren’t strictly smoking-related but still align with the Artifact mindset.
The cannabis world is constantly evolving, which makes it an incredible space to design for. In this interview, we dive into the story of Kiva's humble beginnings, the flavors that fuel her passion, and her thoughts on how cannabis can transform perceptions—even those of a certain former First Lady. Buckle up for this sweet and inspiring ride as we ask Kristi five questions about life, legacy, and, of course, edibles.
High Herstory: Can you tell us the story of how you became the founder of one of the top cannabis edible brands in the U.S.?
Kristi Palmer: My husband Scott and I just graduated from photography school and were having trouble getting our careers off the ground when the recession hit. Living in the Bay Area in California, we were aware of the shifting views on cannabis, saw that it was more accessible than ever, and felt it could be an exciting space to be in. It was definitely risky, but at the same time we had nothing to lose. Our first venture was a small cannabis grow in the backyard of my childhood home. It didn’t last long but it did give us an appreciation for the art of growing and introduced us to the industry as well as the many shops that we would end up building long-term relationships with. Everyone we met was passionate, knowledgeable and really cared about the plant and those who used it. It was in visiting these dispensaries that we realized there was a huge opportunity for edibles innovation.
We knew if we could create delicious, consistent, and beautifully-branded edibles that we could enjoy ourselves and share with our friends, they would be a huge hit for everyone. That’s when we began developing the Kiva brand and started making chocolate in our home kitchen. That was 15 years ago. Fast forward to today and we have a house of brands that include those original Kiva chocolate bars, our beloved Camino gummies and chews, Lost Farm gummies and chews, Terra bites and Petra mints. Earlier this year, we expanded our Camino product line to include hemp-derived gummies available through an e-commerce site and in retail stores in some states where it’s legal. Our products are available legally in 36+ markets and we continue to expand.
HH: We know how passionate you are about edibles being as delicious as they are functional. What’s your personal favorite flavor at Kiva?
KP: That’s like asking which child is my favorite! Peppermint bark is one of Scott and my favorite chocolate treats and while we don’t have it every year, when we do make the Kiva Peppermint Bark Dark Chocolate bars (only 100 mg per bar), they are my favorite.
KP (con’t): Everything we do at Kiva is intentional and must exist to solve a problem for the consumer; to capture a new use case or help them create a new experience. From flavors to format to effects, every one of our brands and products were created for a different type of cannabis consumer but my personal favorite are the chocolate bars because that’s how we started. In our early days we used to make peppermint bark. We were naive but feeling adventurous, and we hand slabbed peppermint bark to give to our retail customers and budtenders as a thank you. It took us absolutely forever, but it came out beautifully. This was back in medical times, and the bark was equal in strength to our 180 mg THC bars. It became infamous as it was irresistibly delicious but also punishingly strong for those who weren’t expecting such a high dose. Peppermint bark is one of Scott and my favorite chocolate treats and while we don’t have it every year, when we do make the Kiva Peppermint Bark Dark Chocolate bars (only 100 mg per bar), they are my favorite.
HH: Kiva's known for innovation. If you could collaborate with any historical figure to create a new cannabis product, who would it be and what wild concoction would you whip up?
KP: Nancy Regan. Hear me out. I truly believe in edibles as a way to warm people up to cannabis, so much so that I think that given the chance, they might even make some headway with this infamous anti-cannabis figure. That could in turn have had an impact on the degree in which our society demonized cannabis and the people who used it. We are stuck facing the disastrous consequences of the War on Drugs, and I just can’t help but wonder if sitting across the table from Nancy for a few hours creating, talking and tasting, that maybe she could have been swayed. We would make a micro dosed, chocolate covered fresh strawberry to enjoy right there in the moment.
HH: You've mentioned the importance of consistency in edibles. Do you have an "oops" story from the days before precise dosing was a thing?
KP: Leading up to our first trade show, we had to make as many chocolate bars as we could for inventory but we didn’t have proper equipment to make the quantity we needed. One step in the process requires that you cook off the ethanol and you have to stir it all day long. So we came up with a contraption… if you put it under a vacuum, it lowers the temperature to speed up the process. Under a major time crunch, we waited for magic to happen but it imploded and extraction got all over the kitchen, and all over Scott. We had to save it because it was all we had, so we salvaged it but consistency, potency and precise dosing was a differentiator for us and what we built our reputation on, so we knew we had to re-test it and we ran a sample to the lab right before it closed. On the way back, Scott got pulled over by a cop for a traffic issue. Not knowing what he had in the car, the cop thankfully let him go. We made the deadline and ended up bringing in $5,000 in cash at our first trade show in 2011, only five weeks after the launch of Kiva. We could have cut corners at every step of the process to make our lives easier but we did everything by the book and believe that’s how we got to where we are today - hard work, grit, commitment to innovation, quality, consistency and always acting with integrity.
HH: As a trailblazer in the cannabis industry, what advice would you give to entrepreneurs interested in a career in cannabis?
KP: It is a small industry with many people who have been fighting for access long before Scott and I started Kiva. I would say to any entrepreneur entering cannabis, do your research, learn the regulations and nuances, and build a strong network around you and the company. With every new state we enter, we have a new ecosystem of partners and retailers we have to build and nurture which takes time and resources but is essential to growth. The last piece of advice: be patient. While we’re optimistic about the future, we’re all still waiting on federal legalization, rescheduling, SAFER banking or some movement on one or all of those fronts.

HH: How did Rogue Paq come into existence, and what sparked your journey in the cannabis industry?
I’ve been a wardrobe stylist for 17 years which has taken me into the closets and bureaus of many, many folks. What I noticed is that these otherwise extremely sophisticated individuals were housing their stashes in some really unsophisticated vessels (think shoe boxes, old toiletry bags, Ziplocs). As more and more states became legal I remember trying to source a chic way for my clients to store and travel with their cannabis and I found nothing acceptable. That’s when I decided to design the Ritual Case- and Rogue Paq was born.
HH: How has your background in fashion and finance shaped the design philosophy of Rogue Paq, and what key elements do you think are vital for creating successful cannabis accessories?
It was very important to me, as a stylist, to have access to a chic and highly functional vessel, specifically designed for carrying cannabis. I wanted something that would match the highly cultivated aesthetic of my clients yet function seamlessly for all the tiny tools necessary for cannabis consumption. That’s why I designed the Ritual Case are selected premium materials - lambskin and suede with gold hardware. The case looks understated, yet elevated. From there I just kept designing products which I felt uplifted the aesthetic of the cannabis ritual - hence Rogue Paq’s tagline: Raise Your Ritual. It was also important to me to retain some of the weirdness inherent in cannabis culture, and so while I always strive for best quality for all products, I wanted some of the designs to be extra cheeky. The SendNudes collection is a great example of this. It’s fun and irreverent and sexy. Same goes for the Thank You for Pot Smoking Collection - these pieces are designed for beauty and function but also to make the user giggle. To answer your second question -key elements for creating successful cannabis accessories are good design, great quality, and a specific and unique point of view.
HH: What’s the most surprising feedback you've received from customers about your products, and how has it shaped future designs or offerings? OR What role does community play in Rogue Paq's mission, and could you share some of your favorite past or upcoming collaborations?
It’s been important to us from the beginning to know we are part of something larger which is why we created our Rogue Paq Gives Back program. We are especially sensitive to the fact that the cannabis industry continues to grow and flourish while many suffer in prison for non-violent cannabis-related crimes. We also understand how the Black community is disproportionately and adversely affected. We created a Black Lives Matter Bundle where 100% of the proceeds are donated to organizations like Last Prisoner Project and National Bailout. Additionally, it’s important to us to protect our vulnerable youth and so the proceeds of our Bootyful Bundle are donated to organizations like Trevor Project and National Action Alliance.
We are also sensitive to how our actions as an e-business affect the environment and so we, in conjunction with other businesses, have a climate commitment which has removed thousands of tons of carbon from the atmosphere and has provided carbon-neutral shipping on more than ten million collective orders.
HH: How do you think personal style and cannabis consumption intersect in today’s culture?
As a stylist I believe that everything you wear/carry and fill your home with reflects your taste and sensibilities and, therefore, who you are. The more that cannabis is legalized and destigmatized, the more people are comfortable carrying and displaying their cannabis rituals. For instance, in my home I have a canna-bar which is an open display of the tools and implements I use on the regular. It’s not dissimilar from a traditional bar but mine includes items like Poppy (no surprise!!), my Ritual Case, candles, rolling papers and tray, and an assortment of Rogue Paq lighters and matches.
HH: What guidance would you offer to those looking to break into the cannabis industry?
The best advice I can give is to show up and be consistent. There are a lot of obstacles to working in an industry that is not federally legal. Everything you do feels like you are swimming upstream. However, take heart, because if it was easy, everyone would already be doing it.

High Herstory: Mantelpiece blends vintage aesthetics with modern functionality. Can you share the journey behind creating your signature product, The Vase, and how you balanced both form and function in its design?
Elisabeth Chambry: Creating Mantelpiece and our inaugural product, The Vase, has been many years in the making. It all started back in 2021, when I began sketching the first designs. I wanted to reimagine a traditional bong as one that was completely unrecognizable on a shelf, even if it had been used.
My goal was to create something I had never seen before: a piece that incorporates two water wells—one for smoking flower and another for arranging bouquets. Bongs have always been mistaken for vases or end up with a single flower tucked inside, so I leaned into that dual purpose intentionally. I’ve always been drawn to vintage aesthetics—there’s something about the timelessness of vintage finds that brings character into a space. I wanted this piece to feel universally beautiful, blending seamlessly into any home. Balancing form and function was always the main ambition. With my background in product journalism, I know exactly how my peers scrutinize products, and I wanted this piece to stand up to that same discerning eye. I wanted to create something that looked just as striking after use, knowing that keeping it spotless every time isn’t always realistic. After too many design variations to count, I finally landed on our final design.
HH: Your brand emphasizes the importance of ethical manufacturing and sustainability. What challenges have you faced in ensuring that your products are both environmentally friendly and high-quality, and how have you overcome them?
EC: Sustainability and ethical manufacturing have been at the heart of Mantelpiece from day one, but achieving both without compromising on quality has definitely come with its challenges. One of the biggest hurdles was finding a manufacturer who could execute our intricate design using materials and practices that align with our values of environmental and social responsibility. We’ve worked hard to balance sustainability with affordability, ensuring each piece is high-quality and beautifully crafted. The cost reflects everything that goes into this process—from fair wages and ethical practices for everyone involved to minimizing our environmental impact every step of the way.
HH: Mantelpiece draws inspiration from Art Deco and mid-century modern styles. How do you select the specific design elements from these eras to incorporate into your products, and what role does nostalgia play in your creative process?
EC: I wanted to blend modern and vintage elements so The Vase could effortlessly complement any home decor. My inspiration drew heavily from Art Deco’s timeless elegance, particularly after a trip to the Queen Mary in Long Beach, where the symmetry and intricate detailing left a lasting impression. I’ve always had an eye for mid-century design as well; its clean lines and warmth add a balance that makes The Vase feel at home in both vintage and contemporary spaces.
Nostalgia certainly played a role in the creative process—I love the aesthetic familiarity of these eras, and I wanted The Vase to feel like a beautiful relic of the past, yet one suited for modern-day living. Our first run of Vases includes a unique engraving, making each one feel like a collector’s piece. I have this vision of 100 years from now, on some Antiques Roadshow–style program, where people are discussing The Vase as a cherished artifact from the cannabis destigmatization era of the 2020s.
HH: The dual-purpose nature of The Vase as both a bong and a statement home decor piece is quite innovative. How did you approach the challenge of making a product that feels both elegant as a home decor item and practical as a smoking device?
EC: I knew The Vase had to feel refined enough to sit on a mantel or coffee table, but it also needed to be easy to use and maintain as a smoking accessory. The key was to keep the form sleek while incorporating thoughtful design features, like the separate water wells for smoking and displaying flowers.
It delivers a rich, satisfying hit—there’s plenty of surface area inside, allowing for a fuller pull than usual. Plus, it’s easy to hold and has a sturdy design that won’t tip over. It’s actually been my main way to consume since I got my hands on a smokable prototype.
HH: Mantelpiece supports the Last Prisoner Project, a cause tied to cannabis reform. How does this partnership align with your brand values, and how do you envision Mantelpiece contributing to broader social change within the cannabis space?
EC: I feel it’s important that anyone who takes up space in the industry is mindful of the landscape and the work still to be done. I believe that no one should be in prison for cannabis. As the recreational and legal industry grows, we can’t lose track of working toward meaningful change. That’s why we’re committed to donating a portion of our profits to the Last Prisoner Project, supporting their work in expunging records and freeing those imprisoned for nonviolent cannabis offenses. Mantelpiece also sees its role as helping to destigmatize cannabis use and fostering an industry that’s both inclusive and fair for everyone involved.
