The stigma of consuming cannabis is changing, and so is the consumer. Weddings are a great place to highlight the beauty and diversity of cannabis products and luxury ancillary products. Cannabis consumers know it’s power to amplify an atmosphere of love and union.
To get the inspiration flowing, we collaborated with editor, Claire Eliza, of iconic wedding publication, Bridal Musings to produce a dreamy cannabis wedding shoot featuring an array of dope products! We decided to choose 1906 chocolates, Love + Destroy pipes, My Bud Vase bongs, accessories by Alyson Nicole, and gorgeous Sarah Seven wedding dresses as well as an amazing spliff bar by Barbari Shop for our dream weed wedding.

Cannabis weddings are on the rise
Cannabis weddings are a major trend right now. There are so many benefits of pairing weed with weddings. Despite what non-cannabis users might think, having weed at your wedding doesn't mean you aren't keeping things classy - in fact, people can act a lot more civilized if they aren't pumped with booze. However, you can still incorporate bottles of champagne and alcohol (if you choose!). Basically the rule when it comes to planning your wedding is...you can do whatever you want. Don't be influenced by any potential shade from "helpful" relatives or feel like you have to make choices to please other people. This is your day!

A weed wedding checklist
When planning a weed wedding there are a few practical things consider:
1) Make sure to check with your local authorities about whether or not marijuana is legal where you plan on tying the knot. Local laws may even need to be adjusted if a state passes a new recreational law. Even if you're in Washington State where it's legal to grow your own weed, you'll need a permit to have a cannabis wedding. Obviously, we wish we lived in a world where cannabis was legal everything but until then, it's always better to be safe if you aren't sure.
2) Check with your local cannabis retailer (you might have to jump through hoops to make this happen, but it's worth it in the end) for the cannabis vendors who are licensed to provide services at your wedding.
3) Find a marijuana-friendly catering company for all your ganja-inclusive festivities. Look for a restaurant or caterer with a clean food handling certification.
5) Prepare a cannabis wedding registry (we have some ideas below).
6) If you don't want to have a huge wedding, why not host a small group of your closest friends and plan a private pot-friendly party.
Designing your cannabis wedding
This one is pretty obvious, but we really love using weed leaves and hemp flower during the ceremony as well as the reception. Here are some ideas to use cannabis as a decorative element:

You can go the crafty route and ask your local hemp farm if you can buy any extra flower they may not need to make your own flower arrangements. We paired store bought flowers with wild flowers and hemp to create an organic bouquet
Hire a florist who is cannabis friendly and ask them to weave in cannabis in their design along with your favorite flowers.
If you’re in Los Angeles or Las Vegas, you can buy your flowers from Shop Love Pot, a florist who specializes in stunning cannabis floral designs which include smokable CBD hemp—the kind helps you relax, but doesn't get you high— can be dried to enjoy later as a tea, herbal smoke blend, or for an aromatherapy herbal bath.

Cannabis wedding etiquette
Even though legalization is pretty much mainstream and any type of cannabis use is socially acceptable, you still need to keep these basic rules in mind at your cannabis wedding.
Let everyone attending your cannabis wedding know the dosage you are providing if you plan to serve pot-infused cocktails and appetizers. You want to make sure everyone, however well-versed they may be in weed, have all the information so they can make the best decisions for their selves and their bodies.
In case you are worried about anti-cannabis guests causing a stir, just create a private cannabis area - not to protect those we can't handle it, but to make it more fun (and secretive) for those who do #coolkidsclub
Be considerate with your smoke! Not everyone is tolerant of smoke or may have a condition like CHS that can make second hand cannabis smoke dangerous for them.
Ask your guests to be conscious of their use of fire, whether that be matches, lighters or dropping joints on the ground, if you are in nature. It’s forest fire season and you don’t want your special day to go up in smoke by destroying the environment.

Sabrina Wheeler: Expanding nationally in the cannabis industry requires finesse, given the ever-changing regulations and unique market conditions in each state. Our success in Michigan is largely due to partnering with small, family-owned operators who genuinely care about their brands' success. Similarly, our move into the New Mexico market has been successful, thanks to our existing partnership with a reputable operator in Oklahoma. Our collaboration with StashHouse in particular has been exceptional. Their expertise and professionalism are commendable, and working with their team has been a pleasure. I can't speak highly enough of them!
HH: How has your hands-on experience influenced your approach to overseeing national brand expansion and operations for a cannabis brand?
SW: Entering the industry as a budtender proved to be a pivotal move, despite feeling like a step back from my previous positions in the health and wellness sector, particularly with startup companies. This role provided invaluable insights into the intricacies of cannabis, as the dispensary prioritized comprehensive training and team education to cater to both medical and recreational clientele. Reflecting on this journey, I recognize its significance in contributing to national brand expansion and operational strategies. By engaging with newcomers to cannabis during its early stages of recreational legalization, I gained profound insights that are now applicable in emerging markets.
HH: Stone Road has achieved impressive retail presence, with over 350 outlets in California, 55 in Oklahoma, and 25 in Massachusetts. What strategies have you employed to navigate the unique regulatory landscapes in each state and establish a strong market presence?
SW: Thank you! Our growth can be attributed to several factors, notably our commitment to offering a diverse range of products that cater to every consumer's preferences and needs. Whether it's budget, consumption method, flavor, or THC potency, we strive to ensure our offerings resonate with a wide audience.
While our focus remains on creating products tailored to women and the LGBTQ+ community, our overarching goal is inclusivity, ensuring that everyone can find enjoyment in our offerings.
Entering new markets involves a strategic approach, where we meticulously analyze local demand and tailor our product lineup accordingly. For instance, upon launching in New Mexico, we identified a significant opportunity in the lack of 1g concentrates and high-end preground options. By introducing those 2 products, we've received overwhelmingly positive feedback from consumers, underscoring our ability to adapt and meet market demands.
Ultimately, our success lies in our dedication to giving consumers what they want while maintaining consistency and quality across all states. It's this unwavering commitment that drives our continued growth and solidifies our position in the industry.
HH: Launching in a new state, such as New Mexico in October '23, is a significant milestone. Can you walk us through the preparations and strategies you've implemented to ensure a successful introduction of Stone Road into a new market?
SW: First and foremost, we thoroughly vet our partners, including leveraging our common networks to gather insights on each individual team member, we visit their facilities, inspect their biomass, and ensure they align with our ethos. This process was somewhat streamlined for New Mexico, as we had already worked with our partner in Oklahoma, allowing us to enter the partnership with confidence in their team, operations, and product quality standards.
Once we've established a mutually beneficial contract, we begin the process of designing compliant packaging tailored to the specific market we're entering. This step often takes the longest, as we ensure all stakeholders sign off on the design to avoid any compliance issues. Packaging compliance varies significantly from state to state.
Next, we customize our Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to align with the SKUs we're launching and conduct thorough training sessions with our partner's production team. Ahead of the launch, we engage in community seeding efforts, reaching out to local influencers, buyers, and other key cannabis community members to generate excitement and build brand presence.
Upon launch, we issue a national press release to announce our entry into the new state, aiming to reach a broad audience and inform them about Stone Road's expansion. We've found that many of our loyal customers have connections in other states and help spread the word about our brand to their friends + families. Following the launch, Lex and I personally assist with sales, focusing on fostering relationships with retailers and providing support to our partners. We maintain bi-weekly calls with their production, sales and marketing teams to ensure alignment, address any issues, exchange feedback, and strategize on how we can continue to grow together.
HH: With the cannabis industry evolving rapidly, what trends or developments do you foresee shaping the future of the market, and how is Stone Road positioned to adapt and thrive in this dynamic environment?
SW: I believe that if regulations change, or better yet, if federal legalization emerges, we will witness an influx of investor capital into the market, enabling brands to expand rapidly both nationally and internationally. If this occurs, or if the US aligns with international markets, we may see interstate commerce becoming permissible, which would greatly benefit markets that lack the climate for greenhouse or outdoor flower cultivation, such as California.
At Stone Road, we've positioned ourselves to move swiftly, expand into new markets, and ultimately become an attractive acquisition target. Despite being a lean team of just two individuals (Lex + myself), we've managed to expand our market footprint rapidly. We've not only increased our sales in each state but also expanded our product offerings in each market.
If we've achieved this level of growth as a two-person company with minimal investment, imagine the possibilities with more capital and a larger team!
HH: As someone who started as a budtender and worked their way up, your journey is inspiring. What advice do you have for individuals aspiring to build a successful career in the cannabis industry, especially considering the changing legal landscape and increasing competition?
SW: There are numerous factors, but some include: finding a mentor who is in the role you want to be in and learning exactly what they had to do to get there. Secondly, don’t get complacent - that’s easier said than done, especially when most people develop strong friendships in their working environment. You have to choose your priorities: work with people you like and are familiar with, or venture into the unknown and take the risk of potentially not liking the team, company, or job. I have worked with many companies, some as short as 7 weeks, before I decided that I didn’t see the future I wanted with the team. You have to be able to be real with yourself, your desires, and the reality of the situation. Lastly, network! Say yes to as many events that put you in places with companies or people you admire. I’ve never gotten a job from applying online - I've always been approached by people I knew or their network because I had spent countless hours building relationships with like-minded people and brands. Build a reputation that speaks for itself and you will have endless options of companies wanting to add your talent to the team. It may not be your ideal role, but I strongly encourage everyone to make it explicitly clear before you are even hired on the role that you want to grow into. That way, if that role doesn’t become available to you, there will be no surprises if you decide to leave and go to a company that can offer you your ideal position.

High Herstory: Can you tell us about your journey from a background in psychology, private equity startups, and technology management to then becoming the CEO of YANA, a wellness and creativity center in Washington DC? How did your previous experiences shape your vision for YANA?
Ariana Fleishman: Before any of my professional experiences, my path to founding YANA as a mission driven business is deeply intertwined with my childhood. I moved out of my parents house when I was 12 years old because my parents divorce was extremely difficult to witness. I was lucky enough to have grandparents who lived close by. When I moved in with my grandparents, I learned self-resilience and how to control my emotions at a young age because I was given access to a safe environment, therapy, and great doctors. My grandfather was a well known psychologist worldwide and I knew that I was very fortunate to have a place to seek refuge as a kid. YANA actually stands for “You Are Not Alone” and it is also the nickname my mom gave me when I was young. All of my closest friends and family call me “Yana”, but I don't introduce myself that way anymore to new people. I now want to separate myself from my business and I hope for YANA to become bigger than just me.
10 years ago, I didn't know how I was going to create a business around the mission of YANA. I knew I needed work experience working for someone else to figure out how to start my own business. After undergrad, I worked for a friend's start up company that had a mission to end food waste in the US and make healthy food options accessible to low income families. I did social media marketing and helped develop the backend of their website to work with our warehouse and food delivery operations. This is where I learned how you could scale a business nationwide and also make an impact on social issues. I got picked up by a private equity firm focused on intellectual property assets and I learned alot about IT businesses and tech consulting. While working full time in private equity, I went back to school at Georgetown University and studied Technology Management. By the time I finished my masters degree, I had already become managing director of the PE firm at 25 years old and bought my first home.
Despite these accomplishments, I found myself disillusioned, working under leaders who didn't care about the impact they were making on society as a whole. I was unfulfilled working in an environment that didn't align with my values. Covid hit and I just said “fuck it”. I quit my job and used my 401k to spend 8 months cultivating myself and what legacy I wanted to leave behind. This time and money spent on myself led to the birth of YANA. In America, we are so quick to fill a job role description that we forget to think about what impact we can make from just being true to ourselves.
HH: YANA Creatives is described as a place for members to create unique user-generated content and connect with brands while offering mental wellness services. Can you elaborate on the concept of YANA and how it fosters a cross-industry ecosystem for collaboration and business expansion?
AF: At its core, YANA is more than just a cannabis shop in Washington, DC; it's a thriving community fostering mental wellness, creativity, and collaboration. We view education around cannabis and mushrooms as a resource for our members to gain medicinal benefits and creative enlightenment. Our members have access to a spectrum of wellness services like therapy, yoga, meditation, and microdosing sessions, all facilitated by our team of seasoned wellness advisors, including a clinical psychologist and integrative nutritionist.

AF: Social Media Marketing and lifestyle branding for male owned cannabis brands was fun for sure, but it really was all smoke and mirrors. I learned that it's more important to focus on building the product and what impact the product creates because then the marketing and media is organic and costs so much less to engage people. It doesn't make sense to focus on building the marketing and brand if there isn't a good product or story behind it. I honestly felt like I was shooting myself in the foot by spending so much time and energy creating a persona around someone that wasn't real. Without the cameras, rented homes, cars, and models, there wasn't really anything substantially unique about the business. The amount of money spent on bolstering an image and a facade was way too much and that money could have been used to make more profits for the business. When people care more about their image than financially supporting the people who work for it or creating a quality product, that's when it's time to leave. Building for others honestly taught me alot about what not to do in my own business.
Managing intellectual property portfolios and working with lawyers was even more of a boys club than working in the cannabis industry. This was truly just learning how to navigate a room of men who wanted to do business vs. the men who were only talking to me because I'm the only girl at the conference. I had the same pedigree as any of the men in the room, but deciphering between the ones who wanted to date me vs. the ones who wanted to date me, knew they couldn't, AND still wanted to do business with me was the main skill that I learned working in white collar setting. These people just liked to know where I grew up, what schools I went to, and what country clubs I hung out at. That's really all they need to know to give you a contract and a secure business relationship in a commoditized industry.
With YANA, I focused more on what kind of people I wanted representing the brand. Are my employees aligned with my mission of mental health awareness and do they see this job as a career? Who are the owners of the products I represent in the shop and what is their purpose of being in this industry? The intentions and the core values of the people I hire were more important to me than their experience in business and school. Everyone is new to the cannabis industry so I just wanted to work with people who I actually liked and people who could see my vision as more than just selling weed. Everyone working for YANA has amazing ideas and input on how YANA should connect with our customers. Everyone is so unique and has a different skill they bring to the table. I didn't purposely look for minorities when I was hiring, but YANA is proudly minority-operated and predominantly female-led. This diversity is not a mere statistic; it's a reflection of our commitment to inclusivity and understanding in mental health and wellness.

Western medicine approaches are not something I refute and I do believe in going to the doctor for physicals and any time people are sick of course. But I do think there is room for providing more options. Alternative holistic approaches like therapy, yoga, meditation, change in diet, and microdosing therapeutic sessions offer profound benefits for mental and physical well-being without being dependent on a drug. Our goal is to democratize access to these services, making them more available to those who might not have the means or insurance coverage.
